Types of Cable used in Network

There are Differents types of cables Design for specific requirements some of them are shown:

  • Coaxial Cable
  • Twisted Pair
  • Straight-through cable
  • Crossover Cable
  • Rollover/Rolled Cable
  • Fiber Optical


Coaxial Cable:

The Cable is a Common Communication cable widely used in TVs. The inner wire is a standard straight wire.

Twisted Pair:

The Twisted Pair is a pair of wires insulated and twisted together to reduce Crosstalk

There are two  types of Twisted Cables:

  • Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP)
  • Shielded Twisted Pair (STP)


(UTP) Unshielded Twisted Pair Cable:

The UTP cable is a pair of copper wires wound by plastic insulators. The UTP cheapest form of cable available for Networking purposes. It is mostly used in the Local Area Network (NAT) Environments. Different types of UTP ARE CAT5, CAT 5e, CAT6, CAT6a, and CAT7

There is no shielding or control for electromagnetic interference in a UTP cable. The cabling adheres to a standard color code.

(STP) Shielded Twisted Pair

The Shielded Twisted Pair is a pair of Wires wound around each other and placed inside a Protective foil wrap as protection from Crosstalk and Electromagnetic interference (EMI).

STP Cable provide Control for electromagnetic Interference.

Straight-through Cable:

The Straight-Through cable is used to connect different types of devices such as Routers to Switches, Switch to PC, etc.


Crossover Cable:

The Crossover Cable used to Connect the same types of Devices such as Router-to-Router, Switch-to-Switch, etc


Rollover/Rolled Cable

The Rollover type of Cable is used to connect a Router or a Switch console port to the Computer Communication Port  (COM Port).


Cisco Port and Connectors

Different kinds of Ports And Connectors are used in Cisco Devices.


ANSI TIA/EIA Twisted Pair Categories of Cable Standards:


ANSI TIA/EIA Twisted Pairs:- Provide high-speed data transmission with less Crosstalk and a Different level of performance in signals.

TIA/EIA-568 C:- This is the latest release pair of wires with an eight-conductor Balanced twisted pair cable.

RJ-45:- Registered Jack (RJ) is Used for Connecting LAN segments. It is an eight wire Connector commonly used in NIC Cards.


Console Ports

Every Cisco device will have a Console Port. This is a direct management Interface which gives Administrator control over Routers and Switches.

A console port is an RJ45 Interface that is Directly Connected from either the PC COM Port or Through USB.


Fiber Optic

Fiber Optic is a High-Speed Communication method that uses glass and fiber to transmit data from one end to the other ends by Sending light Pluses on the optic Fibers.


Types of Connections

  • Ethernet is a standard technology that is most common in the Local Area Network
  • Fast Ethernet Supports 100 Mbps
  • Gigabyte Ethernet Support 1000 Mbps speed
  • Wireless communication uses radio Frequency to transfer Data across a Network
  • Modern Networks include satellite TV, Global Positioning  System (GPS) – Satellite navigation that provides location tracking.
 Fiber Optics
  • Provide Higher bandwidth and connects longer distances by creating an opting an optical Signal along with fiber channels
